Sumo Digital, of Crack Down 3 and LittleBigPlanet 3 fame, would enter the fold but only last a year developing Dead Island 2 before Deep Silver finally decided to hand the now tainted title to an in house team, Dambuster Studios.ĭambuster Studios will be responsible for getting this game over the finish line and according to reports, there will be a greater emphasis on quality wiring and environmental design, it will only be available on current generation consoles as well as PCs and we can expect it as early as next year. Again, this partnership would end sourly and result in Yager being kicked off the project due to creative differences.

Deep Silver, the Dead Island publisher, then turned to Yager Development who themselves were hot off the back of Spec Ops: The Line at the time. This new project would become Dying Light, another zombie game in the exact same mould as Dead Island, but with parkour. However, they decided that instead of doubling down on Dead Island, they would abandon it in favor of collaborating with Warner Bros and producing a new, original series. Techland, developers of the first installment and the spinoff: Riptide, was originally in charge of developing the hotly anticipated sequel. Some context is necessary with this announcement as it has almost become a running joke by this point, similar to The Last Guardian. Dead Island 2 will, apparently, be revealed again at the end of this year with the intention to release early next year. Now, 8 years after, it seems as though there could finally be light at the end of this bizarre and convoluted tunnel. It's hard to believe Dead Island 2 was originally announced at the 2014 E3 with a plan to release in 2015.
